  • No – you do not need a referral to see a psychologist. If you wish to claim the rebate for appointments through Medicare, however you will need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from a GP.

  • The first session is an opportunity for each of us to get to know each other. You are trying to figure out if you want to work with me and communicate what is important for me to understand you and your needs. It generally consists of sharing some historical information, as well as your current needs and concerns (this is to inform my initial assessment of your needs). Towards the end of the session we explore your personal goals and create a plan together to move forward.

    The initial consultation typically lasts 60-90 minutes.

  • If you have sought a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan then you can claim up to 10 sessions per calendar year. This claim entitles you to a rebate of $92.90 per session.

    Most private health care funds do cover visits to a psychologist, however you will need to check with your specific health fund and extras cover.

  • This question is almost impossible to answer. The number of sessions required is dependent on your current concerns. A treatment plan will be established in the initial session after an assessment of need has been undertaken.

  • As a courtesy, 24 hours notice is required for all cancellations. If less than 24 hours is provided for a consult, 50% of the fee charge may apply.
